With over 30 billion email messages sent in 2003, over 60 billion in 2006 according to IDC (and probably over 200B by 2009), email is the critical communication tool for organizations and individuals worldwide. With increasing dependence on email, even the slightest disruption in service can have significant financial impact on a business.
In just a few years, spam, also known as "Junk mail" has turned into a major cyberthreat. Unsolicited correspondence includes advertisements for the widest imaginable range of products, ranging from university degrees to pornography. Spam may contain offensive content, but that isn't the biggest problem: it jams individual mailboxes, causes Denial of Service attacks on enterprise servers and can spread viruses.
Most spam is sent by unethical hustlers, pornographers and outright scammers. Many spammers have criminal records; some attempt to dupe people into revealing their Credit Card number while "ordering" a product or service that doesn't really exist or has minimal value. Another primary purpose of spam is to dupe legitimate home businesses into purchasing an email list or spam service. In many countries, sending spam is illegal and is a sure way to ruin your business. In short, spam may work for criminals and shady businesses, but it does not work for legitimate businesses.
While many spam filters rely, often exclusively, on black-lists of open-relays such as ordb.org, the others does not use this list since they often block legitimate e-mail. Over 50,000 legitimate companies, organizations and Universities in the US and Canada are on these open-relay black-lists. Simply being on the list is not proof that they are sending spam.

The volume of spam email received by businesses has exploded to 55-75, more offten about 90 percent of all email traffic. According to the Gartner Group, workers spend on average 49 minutes managing email each day, and that figure is rising. Time is money, isn't it? So, don't waste the time to clean junk mail!
Security threats cost organizations over $12.5 billion worldwide each year.
A variety of solutions, both software (running locally or on the server) and hardware (typically appliences with embedded OS and antispam/antivirus software) have been developed and implemented, ranging from regulation to blacklists and anti-spam filters, using linguistic tools.
